What is the Cranio Sacral system?

The Cranio Sacral system concerns the meningeal system, which envelopes the whole brain and spinal cord. It is composed of three layers of membrane: the dura matter (the tough and waterproof outer layer); pia matter (the innermost layer which follows every contour and groove of the brain and spinal cord and carries blood vessels that service them); and, the arachnoid membrane, which is the middle layer that serves as a gliding surface between the outer and inner layers. The cerebrospinal fluid between each of the three layers has a constant flow between the cranium and sacrum. Without this fluid, the layers adhere to each other causing pain, among other adverse effects.

How does a qualified CST Therapist help?

A qualified CST Therapist can identify areas where membranes are not free to glide and thus are sources of pain that is evident in distant parts of the body. Through specialized training, the therapist unblocks the impingements in the dura tube and treats according the findings. Through gentle manipulation of the bones of the skull, cranium, vertebrae, pelvic area and sacrum, the fluid is balanced and relief and recovery are possible. This is a VERY gentle movement – not heavier than sliding a nickel across a piece of paper.

Who can it help?

As science progresses and other alternative healing modalities incorporate Cranio Scaral Therapy, it is realized that there are an abundant amount of abnormalities that can be relieved by this therapy. CST can help: Autism, ADD and ADHD, Erbs and Bells Palsy, seizures, learning disabilities, developmental delays, Cerebral Palsy, emotional and mental blocks, anxiety, depression, focusing issues, hormonal problems (PMS, menopause), neck and back injuries, migraines, obsessive/compulsive disorders, addictions, TMJ, ear pain and deafness. CST has also helped in cases of chronic pain and fatigue syndromes, arthritis and joint pain, headaches of all types, neuralgia, backaches, Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, degenerative diseases of the nervous system, stroke recovery, pre and post-operative rehabilitation, Colic and labor and delivery, and decreasing hypertension.

In conclusion, Mary Ellen Clark (1992 and 1996 Olympic Bronze Medalist, 10-Meter Diving), had this to say about her experience and treatment with Cranio Sacral Therapy: "It not only made me feel relaxed and rejuvenated, but ultimately corrected the core issue that created the vertigo that I had been experiencing. This therapy was THE REASON I was able to come back in the sport of diving to finish once again on the awards stand in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta."
